Pioneer AVH-3300NEX

MSRP: $600

It was one of those days, sitting in the office and looking out of the window at a perfectly sunny Los Angeles day. After watching a painstakingly boring Google I/O live stream, the thought of staring at a computer screen was not high on the list of things we wanted to do. Luckily for us Pioneer sent us an invite for an in-vehicle demo of their new products. We headed out to The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel where we were got a first hand look at their new single-DIN receiver. Launching in July, the new Pioneer AVH-3300NEX is set to become the first ever Android Auto and Apple CarPlaycompatible single-DIN receiver to be released.

First Impressions

We’re going to skip past the standard details; the AVH-3300NEX covers all of the basics like Bluetooth, CD/DVD player, AM/FM and back up camera input. For our preview we’ll just be focusing on the new features.

Single-DIN for the Win

For anyone with a car from the 1960s to the early 2000s you most likely don’t have space for a double-DIN stereo, and to use Android Auto or Apple CarPlay you must have at least a 6” in-dash display.  The 7” motorized touchscreen display on the AVH-3300NEX is just the solution for this. You are able to control the angle the display is positioned as well, so this unit should fit in almost any vehicle out there

While in the past Waze was compatible with Pioneer’s AppRadio, last year Waze removed support for that app. Thankfully for 2017 you will finally be able to use Waze on your in-dash display again. Using Pioneer’s AppRadio Mode+ app you can use either an Android phone or iPhone to connect to the head unit via USB cable. Upon opening the AppRadio app you can select the Waze icon and the app will now be displayed on the screen. Using the in-dash touchscreen you can then enter in your destination as well as scroll around the map without having to touch your phone. During our brief test we only were able to listen to AM/FM radio or HD radio while using Waze, however once this unit is released we will do a comprehensive review.

Spotify and Pandora Integration

With the updated design of the user interface you now be able to control Spotify and Pandora as a source directly from the home screen. By connecting your Android or iPhone you will be able to control your content by using the touchscreen, and for Spotify Premium users you can even listen to your offline music if you want to save your data plan. For Pandora users you will be able to create a new station based off who what artist is currently playing, you will also be able to store six preset stations making it easier to toggle between your favorite stations.

Improved Audio Quality

Utilizing new PCB boards and audiophile-grade capacitors the expanded 13 brand Graphic EQ will give you greater control of your listening preferences. For even further control you can add on the Pioneer CD-MC20 microphone to enable Auto EQ and Auto Time Alignment.

The Verdict

For anyone looking to upgrade to Android Auto or Apple CarPlay that has limited space in their dash, this is the head unit to get. Add in all of the other features like being able to use Waze with the in-dash display and a MSRP of $600, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better option out there.
