In a surprise move during the 2018 WWDC, Apple announced that they are finally opening up CarPlay to allow third-party navigation apps like Waze and Google Maps. These apps will become available to CarPlay users with the launch of iOS 12. While no official release date has been announced, typically iOS updates are launched in the fall when new iPhone models are released.
CarPlay has typically been a tightly controlled environment, with Apple Maps being the only option for navigation since it’s launch in 2014. As Google Assistant has leapfrogged Apple’s Siri as the best virtual assistant, it looks as if Apple might want to retain their user base by allowing them more options to use the best apps possible. For those holding out on using Apple CarPlay because the lack Waze and Google Map support, those days are soon to be over.
